People tend to learn games only for marathons. I think we can make this into an actual thing.

We would select 4-5 different games which should be:
- Not too expensive
- Accessible
- Decent length. I'd say no longer than 45 minutes.
- Recognizable
- No obvious runners to make it a fair competition

We announce these games, and those 4 runner with the best times at a certain deadline, will get the chance to play this game during ESA.

Edit: Suggestion about the flow of game suggestions.
1 - We discuss and pick 8-10 games internally. Maybe even just go ahead and make it 1 game each? (First cut)
2 - We make a post on the SDA forums with a poll. There should be 4 games left (Second/Final cut)
3 - ???
4 - Profit

Game suggestions:

Castlevania Rebirth - Wii Ware
Journey to Silius - NES
Sparkster (Rocket Knight Adventures 2) - Genesis/SNES (2 different games)
Stider - Genesis
GTA 5 Trevor% run (Under 90 minutes of optimization-filled awesome) - 360/PS3/Hopefully PC
Anodyne - A 2D zelda-like game with a broom.
Limbo - A dark sidescrolling puzzle game.
Batman - Genesis (Sunsoft game! No real speedrun of the game existing!)
Metroid Fusion
Super Mario Land 2 - Gameboy

HD console, modern game:
GTA 5 Trevor% run (Under 90 minutes of optimization-filled awesome) - 360/PS3/Hopefully PC

Final time when beginning playable segment as Trevor, opening menu and seeing total time played. Quite alright as a two-player race also.
Well, gif PC game and I could consider it. Still probably not. Sorry.

I don't see why PC games could not be on the list?

Especially if they are a bit older and can run on basically any machine!

I don't know much about the versions, but both Contra and Ninja Gaiden have arcade versions that have been released to XBLA (Contra) and Wii VC (Ninja Gaiden).

I have seen Mr. K speedrun the arcade version of Contra and it was a hilarious watch!
I know even less about the Ninja Gaiden game, but both franchises are hype so perhaps that's good? :)

EDIT:

PC games I can think of is:
Anodyne - A 2D zelda-like game with a broom.
Limbo - A dark sidescrolling puzzle game.

Both games seems pretty short. Anodyne seems to have glitches. I don't know about Limbo.

I'm going to suggest Super Marioland 2 for the GameBoy, even though there is the risk, that 99 % have already played it some time. It's the only one I know that might work.

You mean the old route then? or glitched%?
Ok, I wanna see runs of:

Hand-held games: DS

Like Metroid Fusion etc.

Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, hopefully get a 3ds master like greenalink to come to ESA this time around!

(Limbo is scary as hell! I have been racing that on SRL sometimes)
I think you misunderstood the concept Svenne :)

DS/3DS is not accessible due to the expensive and very rare capture setups.
ah, sorry! XD

I was just thinking if he wants to come nd bring his own streaming eq for it :3

I like this idea.

No, that is just my pet pikachu, Chuchu. He thinks he's a train.
It's been about a week.

Does anyone oppose this idea?

Suggestion for OP:

For every major marathon there are a handful of runners who suggest games they currently are not comfortable with or maybe has never ever played for the sole reason that it's a popular game and they believe it has a higher chance of making it into final schedule. This is necessarily not a bad thing and it has attracted our interest. Therefore, we present to you:

Bounty games!

So, what's this all about?

It's a way for us organizers to put our personal touch on the schedule by pre selecting games that we would like to see during the marathon. When discussing what games would be suitable we had a few criterion like that the games should be recognizable, affordable, not too RNG heavy,  no longer than an hour but most importantly not have an already huge community.

How are runner for each games decided?
The runner/runners with the best time/times at a certain deadline will be the winner of the bounty, and will be asked, if willing, to play that particular game during ESA2014.
Hopefully the runs will turn in races / co-op.

What are the games in question? (Tentative list)

Castle of Illusion HD

Castlevania Rebirth

Sparkster (SNES version)

Ikaruga

Mega Man 1-6 (Robot masters only)

Gunstar Heroes

Batman (Genesis version)

Strider (Genesis version)

Limbo

Super Mario Land 2

Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3

Anodyne

Zelda Oracle of Time / Ages (Back to back games) - Can be done by a team of 2 players.

Bubsy (SNES version)

Star Fox 2 (If we can get carts for it?)

Wonder Boy in Monster World (3)

Wonder Boy IV

GTA 5 - some%

*** I cut DS games from the list due to capturing difficulties **
I know you posted on SDA but I rather write here :)

If I could choose it would be: Castle of Illusion HD, Limbo, GTA 5 - some%

Limbo would be perfect at night if we wanna continue with a spooky theme. :) And it's one of the best indie games in the alst couple of years, with Braid.

DuckTales HD got all the love, Castle of Illusion seems to be a better game after watching several hours of runs of it.

Everything GTA, I would love if we could do the whole series (no joke)
