I recently saw heard that emulators in all forms will be banned for ESA this year (and probably coming years as well) in all instances, except for DOSbox.

While I see the reason in banning emulators for e.g. NES, N64, PS1 etc, I do not see the logic in enforcing a blanket rule with a single exception.

Computers that run DOS well are becoming more scarce as the years go by, but this does not mean they're all that rare. In addition, the video signal is carried through VGA, which requires no modding to capture properly with a secondary computer.

At the same time, there's loads of consoles that probably never will recieve a run neither at SDA nor any marathon due to this rule since capturing them would require a private person to both research and build a capture mod for that specific console, similar to how 3DScapture.com came about. The difference is that there's a big demand for 3DS capture.

Now, like I said this wouldn't apply for consoles like GBA, DS or PSVita. However I do think consoles like the Gamegear, Neo Geo Pocket or Virtual Boy should deserve special treatment in this regard, at least for exclusive games. MAME is also a terrific emulator for arcade games that while not technically all that hard to capture, still requires a whole load of transportation costs to get a single game to the location.

There's also the matter of games for Android. I'm not sure where the line is drawn between emulator and natively running programs, but things like Bluestacks certainly is a special case.
Thread title:
I don't have a good answer. And I think it will be brought up for discussion with the guys who held the roundtable if a suggestion is posted for any of these consoles.

I actually think there are mods for all the consoles that your mentioned? But I doubt there is even a Neo Geo Pocket game that would make the final cut :)

While it does exist: http://www.chrismcovell.com/segahacking/ggrgb.html http://hackaday.com/2013/06/17/giving-the-virtualboy-a-vga-out/ it's more or less a specialist project, nothing you really can order online. And yes there is at least one game on Neo Geo Pocket that makes a good speedrun, Sonic Pocket Adventure ;).

Of course it's only relevant if someone actually offers it, but bluntly saying it's not allowed to begin with would discourage anyone from submitting it in the first place. But if they would I'd hope it's not directly disregarded by such a rule when other, less sensible exceptions exist
It would actually be nice if we could use some emulators. Visual Boy Advance for example would be really neat because Hard Reseting on Gameboy Player takes a lot of time (compared to the actual GBA) so the emulator would be a nice solution (also some games have only been run on VBA)
Thing is, this community has enough expertise around to implement all sorts of mods.

I'm just gonna go ahead and say NO. :)
What is the opinion of emulating on a console? For example, running a game from SD-card on Wii etc.

Arzga, that's an official emulator if you are refering to the DIOS-MIOS project, because it's basically the same as running the gamecube disc in your wii, just the sd-card is generally much slower than a disc in loading times(i have a class 6 card myself and that's way too slow)

Still emulator. Still no.
So Gameboy Player it is, I can live with that^^

Edenal he's talking about running Gamecube games on a wii, that's an official and accepted emulator and used quite a bit @ agdq too iirc atleast that's what i'm getting from it which is why i mentioned DIOS-MIOS
DIOS-MIOS is not accepted. Simple as that.

Even if I'm not one that use this system myself,
can someone in a short way inform why these changes was made?

Got a bit curious from this discussion.
There's no reason to allow emulators for common consoles.

Emulators have a negative impact on the authenticity of speedruns.

So that's the reason they suddenly changed from what was acceptable before?
I don't get what you're getting at? Emulators have never been accepted.

With the one exception when we had to cut two runs because the runner had to cancel last minute.
